Free DVD Video Converter is a simple but functional DVD and Blu-ray ripper. It allows you to back up your DVD movies as video files in various formats. Besides, the program can also extract the audio of your DVDs, and save it as an MP3 or a WAV file. The program is capable of producing output video files optimized for portable devices, such as iPod, Blackberry, and Xbox, too.
Free DVD Video Converter offers an intuitive though unattractive user interface. It allows you to select your source DVD or Blu-ray movie either from a disc or from a folder containing the corresponding files. In a separate window, the program allows you to choose the titles you want to extract, the audio tracks (languages), and – optionally – a subtitle track, all of which will be included in your output video files.
Finally, you can choose your desired output format and preset for the extraction. The program only supports four output video formats: MP4, MKV, AVI, and MP3. However, it includes plenty of presets per supported format. The MP4 format offers you many presets optimized for portable devices, while MKV and AVI barely allow you to select the output quality level among values ranging from “economy” to “perfect”. As a tip, if you want to extract the audio of a movie and save it as a WAV file, you will need to select MP3 format first, and then select the WAV preset.
In short, I would say it is worth using Free DVD Video Converter to rip your DVD movies, especially if your needs are not very advanced or specific.
